legend of the waterstone
The legend was born many years ago, when the Waterstone helped make a village a better place to live.
The village rested on a bountiful body of water which it relied on for nourishment, income and recreation. But surging currents sometimes threatened homes and businesses, forcing some villagers to seek higher ground. Life near the water was usually good but sometimes challenging.
Though the villagers relied on the water, they longed to control its unpredictability. So village leaders decided to form a break wall by arranging a row of rocks at the water's edge. One village elder (regarded as a bit eccentric) warned that this plan would fail, but he was ignored and, at great effort, the break wall was constructed. Soon after, strong storms and fast currents shifted the rocks making up the break wall, and it failed.
Frustrated and disappointed, the village leaders turned to the eccentric elder for advice. "Our problem will be solved by Waterstones," he told them, much to their puzzlement. The elder then took the village leaders to the base of the waterfall that fed their cherished water. He reached into the pool below and, with a crooked smile on his face, removed a beautiful, glistening stone worn smooth by the rushing waters.
"This is a Waterstone," the elder happily explained. "For many years it has been adapting to the water and land, learning to work with these elements in ways that we cannot. Unseen yet always at work beneath the surface, the Waterstones will hold the rocks firmly in place."
The village leaders took the elder's advice and rebuilt their break wall on a strong foundation of Waterstones. The new break wall held firm, and the Waterstones served the village well and faithfully.
